In the spring of 1996 in a small apartment in Toronto, Canada, a young man named Michael Shapiro had a simple dream: He wanted to open his own business. Michael, who had spent years working in the corporate world, wanted this new business to incorporate two of his greatest interests: Judaism and art. In this way, in that one small room, Ketubah Ketubah (www.ketubah.com) was born – the first online Ketubah specialty store. Never before was there a single store that focused on the creation of the Jewish marriage document and clearly, there was a need for it. The business grew almost faster than he could keep up with it and soon Michael moved into an office space and gallery in the heart of the city.
Over the years, Michael’s business continued to grow. Currently, he has assembled an accomplished and diverse team of Ketubah experts who all fluently read and write in Hebrew, including: a mediocre fencer who spent the night on a construction site in Ghana, a ceramic artist who lived in a hut with a 50 pound pig in Western India, a birdwatcher who shared a room with eight cats in the Cook Islands, a cake decorator who sleeps soundly at home with her three adorable children in Toronto and a collector of bee bric-a-brac who woke up with a dead bat by her head while on safari in South Africa.
